Blast from the Past
Before the evolution of basketball took place, its origins already existed. From the rivalry between the Bill Russell of the Celtics and Wilt Chamberlain of the 76ers and Lakers came about different styles, skills and techniques were derived. The hottest decade of their rivalry took place in the 1950s until the 1960s.
After a couple of decades comes another set of names rocking the league: Bird and Johnson. Larry Bird continued the rivalry legacy left by Russell and Chamberlain. Bird came from the Boston Celtics while Johnson came from the Los Angeles Lakers. These two were known for their offensive tactics. They were also known in the industry to have cleared the way for different styles of Penny Hardaway, Tracy McGrady and Michael Jordan as swingmen in hard court.
In the 90's, not just a couple of names sprouted to take the spotlight left by legends and their rivalries. Two pairs made their names in the industry not just as individuals but as duos. One of these pairs is the John Stockton and Karl Malone tandem, who are now believed to have passed on their signature strategy of guard-centre combos to present hard court duo, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.
And who will forget the team up of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen? They rocked the new millennium with their team up's defense, but their legend did not end when they retired. The new blood of players show the same game weight of these two; and the duo which was seen with their style is Ray Allen and Vince Carter.
The Epitome
Although there are a lot of similarities from the legends and the new breed of players, the techniques, skills and qualities of these legends seemed to have accumulated to one name; and his career is still blossoming. The name is LeBron James.
People say he already has an NBA built when he was drafted for NBA, and he was just a high school senior then. The public called him the "New Jordan", not only because he wears #23 but also because of his skills. Critics say that at the fourth year of LeBron's career, he is already on the same level as Michael Johnson. His slam dunks were of the same quality as with legendary dunkers like Shaquille O'Neal and Vince Carter. Having all these skills, it really makes LeBron worthy of the title given to him by one of the critics of NBA, that LeBron is a basketball prodigy.
